With the absence of
Wayne Smith, the SCSC’s best player, the eleventh, and final, round of the
2007 Maricopa Cup was up for grabs. As there were only four players they agreed
to play each other twice, once on each of the pitches.
In the first round of
games Edward Nathan
and Kevin Nieman
beat the Hutchinsons,
Simon and
Dominic.
In the second round a defensive error by Nieman allowed Simon to score the
game winning goal. Nathan ‘mercy ruled’ Dominic to be the only player with two
wins.
The battle of the Hutchinsons, in the third round, ended in a goalless draw.
While on the other pitch Nieman ended Nathan winning streak with a fast goal and
another both players described as "unstoppable".
In the first of “second leg” games Nathan drew 1-1 with Simon, citing that
the frustration of having missed an open goal when Simon stranded his spare
goalkeeper effected the rest of his game. Dominic’s game was more important that
it was his 100th competitive game rather than the fact the Nieman beat him 4-0.
Nieman and Simon fought out another hard fought draw in a game that was
described a “very tense”. Despite losing Dominic surprised Nathan with a fast
shot at goal to score his first goal of the competition.
Dominic scored his second by flicking a player from his own half that
struck the ball on the edge of the penalty box, this made up for the two goals
that his father, Simon, had scored earlier in the game.
Nathan won his fourth game with a ‘mercy rule’ victory over Nieman. His four
wins placed Nathan in first place. Nieman was in second place with a superior
goal difference to Simon. Dominic finished in fourth.
