As was fitting for the largest event in California in four years the
Western
States Open broke the record for the most well attended tournament in the
“Golden State”. Twelve came to challenge for honor of having their name engraved
the trophy, including David Jensen who was participating in his first
tournament.
The top four seeds all won their groups and their quarter final matches. In the
semi finals Wayne Smith beat
Simon Hutchinson and
Steve Tucker beat
John Carroll
to earn their places in the final.
The final was an exciting affair with an early goal and an equalizer just before
half time. The game went into “sudden death” over time and with just seven
seconds remaining Wayne scored the winning goal. This is the third time he has
won the Western States Open, previously winning it in 1999 and 2004.
John and Simon third place game ended in a tie, with John equalizing just before
the end of the game.
Both of the Mary Jane semi finals went to overtime before
Dominic Hutchinson
beat Adam Carlson and
Ian Sayer overcame
David Jensen. A single goal in the
final gave Ian the win.
Dominic beat Adam a second time to win the Under 19 final.
